Information about Alder

Janka Hardness: 590 lbf.

Alder is a versatile hardwood prized for its warm, consistent color and smooth grain. Often compared to cherry in appearance, Alder features a light brown to reddish-tan hue that finishes beautifully and evenly. It’s easy to work with—both by hand and machine—making it a favorite for cabinetry, furniture, doors, and millwork. Because of its uniform texture and ability to take stain exceptionally well, Alder is commonly used in both custom and production-grade interior woodwork, especially when a refined look is desired at a more affordable price point.

Our Alder Grades

Superior

Superior Alder is the highest grade available for Alder lumber. It features long, clear cuttings with minimal knots and defects, offering a clean, uniform appearance ideal for fine furniture, cabinetry, doors, and mouldings. Its smooth grain and consistent color make it perfect for applications requiring a premium finish or stain. This grade provides high yield and is favored by professionals seeking both beauty and efficiency.

Rustic

Rustic Alder celebrates the natural character of the wood, including open and closed knots, color variation, and mineral streaks. This grade is ideal for projects where a more relaxed, organic, or aged look is desired—like in rustic-style furniture, cabinetry, and paneling. While still structurally sound, Rustic Alder embraces the imperfections that give wood personality and warmth, offering a cost-effective option with a lot of visual interest.
