Information about Douglas Fir

Janka Hardness: 620 lbf

Douglas Fir is a versatile softwood known for its strength, stability, and appealing grain. Its color can vary depending on the age and origin of the tree, typically ranging from light brown with hints of red or yellow to more defined contrasts with darker growth rings. Quartersawn Douglas Fir offers a clean, straight grain, while flatsawn pieces can showcase bold, wild grain patterns often seen in rotary-sliced veneers.

The grain is generally straight or slightly wavy, with a medium to coarse texture and a natural luster. Douglas Fir machines well and is compatible with most finishes, glues, and stains, though it may have a moderate dulling effect on tools. While the heartwood has moderate resistance to decay, it is not highly insect-resistant, making it better suited for interior or protected applications. It’s widely used in timber framing, doors, millwork, and high-end construction where both appearance and performance matter.

Our Douglas Fir Grades

C & Better

This grade includes mostly clear, high-quality boards with minimal knots and consistent grain. C & Better Douglas Fir is ideal for applications where a clean, refined appearance is important—such as exposed beams, trim, cabinetry, and fine woodworking. It offers excellent strength, straight grain, and ease of finishing.

#2 & Better

#2 & Better Douglas Fir includes sound, usable boards with a mix of clear sections and tight knots. This grade balances strength and appearance, making it suitable for general construction, framing, and applications where some natural character is acceptable. It's a durable, cost-effective option for both structural and aesthetic uses.
