Hemlock

Information about Hemlock

Janka Hardness: 500 lbf

Hemlock is a softwood known for its light reddish-brown heartwood and subtle grain character. The sapwood is typically similar in color, offering a uniform appearance. On flatsawn surfaces, its prominent growth rings can create eye-catching grain patterns, adding visual depth.

The grain is generally straight but can occasionally be interlocked or spiraled, with a coarse and uneven texture. While Hemlock is not naturally rot-resistant and can be prone to insect damage, it remains a popular choice for interior applications like framing, paneling, and trim.

In terms of workability, Hemlock is moderate—it can splinter and doesn’t always plane evenly due to its hard latewood and soft earlywood. However, it glues, stains, and finishes well, making it a versatile option for projects that call for an attractive, economical wood.

Our Hemlock Grades

#2 and Better

Hemlock #2 and Better is a versatile construction-grade lumber that includes boards with a mix of clear sections and tight, sound knots. This grade allows for some visual imperfections while still offering strong structural integrity, making it ideal for framing, utility work, and rustic interior applications where appearance is less of a priority.

You’ll find a natural blend of Hemlock’s light reddish-brown tones and straight grain, with moderate variation across boards. While it’s not decay-resistant, it finishes well and holds up nicely indoors. This grade offers a solid balance between performance and affordability.
