Information about Poplar

Janka Hardness: 540 lbf

Poplar is a versatile and budget-friendly hardwood widely used for interior and exterior trim, cabinetry, furniture, and store fixtures. Known for its straight grain and smooth surface, poplar is an excellent choice when a paint-grade hardwood is needed. While it doesn’t absorb stain evenly, it finishes beautifully with paint, making it a top pick for clean, solid-color applications. As our most cost-effective hardwood for painting, poplar delivers durability, workability, and value for a wide range of projects.

Our Poplar Grades

FAS/Prime

FAS represents the highest quality grade of Poplar. This grade features long, clear sections with minimal defects, making it ideal for high-end applications where appearance matters—such as fine furniture, mouldings, and architectural millwork. Boards in this category offer excellent workability and a uniform look with fewer knots and color inconsistencies.

#1 Common

#1 Common is a versatile, mid-range grade that allows for more character than FAS. It’s commonly used in cabinetry, furniture framing, and trim applications where shorter clear sections are acceptable. You’ll find some knots, color variation, and mineral streaks, but plenty of usable material for quality projects.

#2 Common

#2 Common is a more rustic grade with frequent knots, color streaks, and natural imperfections. It’s well-suited for utility-grade work or projects where a more natural or distressed look is desired. This grade offers a cost-effective option for large-scale jobs, paint-grade trim, or hidden structural elements.
