Tidewater Lumber's Red Oak Tread offers a clean, timeless look with unmatched strength and durability. Crafted from premium-grade Red Oak and precision-milled in-house, each stair tread measures 1" thick x 11 ½" deep and is available in standard lengths including 36", 42", 48", 54", and 60"—with custom lengths available upon request.
This tread can be ordered wall-to-wall or with a left or right return, depending on your stair configuration. All returns feature a mitered nosing for a seamless, finished edge that conceals end grain and elevates the overall appearance of your staircase.
Each tread is made to order using top-quality hardwood and state-of-the-art milling equipment, ensuring long-term performance and visual appeal. We air-dry and process each piece with care, resulting in stair treads that resist warping and wear over time—perfect for both residential and commercial projects.
Available Return Options
- 48" return left
- 48" return right
Dimensions & Terminology
- Depth: Distance from front to back of the tread
- Width: Measured from left to right, excluding any returns
- Thickness: Standard 1"
- Return: A mitered edge applied to one or both ends for exposed stair sides
How to determine left or right return: Stand at the bottom of your staircase and look up. If the exposed side is on the right, you’ll need a right return—if it’s on the left, choose a left return.
What is Square Edge Profile?
- Flat, 90° edge — no rounding
- Clean, modern, contemporary look
- Often used with a separate nosing piece added on site
- Common in floating stair designs
- Can feel more sharp underfoot if overhang is present
- Typically requires more precise installation
What is Standard Bull Nose?Â
- Front edge is rounded over
- Traditional, classic appearance
- Nosing is built into the tread profile
- Most common in carpet or hardwood installs
- Softer, safer edge (gentler on bare feet)
- More forgiving during install
We offer both profiles for all of our treads. Still not sure which stair tread profile you need? Give us a call and we'll be happy to discuss.
