Southern Yellow Pine Drop Siding Pattern 105

Southern Yellow Pine Pattern 105 Siding offers a timeless horizontal profile with a gentle cove curve and shiplap-style overlap, making it a popular choice for rustic, traditional, and farmhouse-style exteriors. Its smooth face and subtle shadow line add depth and character, while the rabbeted, interlocking edges allow for efficient installation and dependable exterior performance. Each board is milled ¾" thick and available in three face heights: 6 3/8" A profile, 7 1/8" B profile, and 7 3/4" C profile, giving you flexibility to match the scale and style of your project.

Southern Yellow Pine Drop Siding Resources:
Guide to Southern Pine Siding

Southern Yellow Pine Drop Siding Pattern 105 Maintenance:
Like any unfinished exterior wood, Pattern 105 siding needs the right protection to keep it looking and performing its best. We recommend applying a quality exterior finish to all surfaces, including the ends of each board. A proper finish helps limit moisture absorption, UV damage, and staining caused by mold or mildew.

Occasionally, Southern Yellow Pine may develop a mill glaze during the planing process. If that happens, the surface should be properly prepped before staining. Pressure washing may help open the grain, while sanding can also be used when the material is prepared consistently across the entire project.

We carry both oil-based and water-based exterior finishes and can help recommend the right option based on the color, look, and maintenance schedule you want. Most exterior finishes will need to be refreshed every 3 to 5 years depending on sun and weather exposure. We also recommend properly caulking joints where siding meets corners or trim to help keep moisture from getting behind the boards.

Not sure which finish or caulk is right for your project? Give us a call. We are always happy to help you choose the right products before the first board goes up.

What Is German Siding?
German siding is one of the most recognizable names for this style of drop siding, and it's often used interchangeably with Pattern 105. The term traces back to German and Central European building traditions, where a similarly profiled board — with a concave cove along the top edge and a rabbeted bottom lap — was used to shed water efficiently while creating a distinctive, textured wall surface. Today, "German siding" is commonly used in the lumber industry to describe any drop siding with that signature curved reveal and overlapping joint, making it a familiar term for builders sourcing traditional or farmhouse-style exteriors.

What Is Novelty Siding?
Novelty siding is a broader category term that covers drop siding profiles milled with a decorative face — as opposed to plain, flat lap siding. Rather than referring to one specific shape, "novelty siding" is often used as an umbrella term for horizontal siding boards that combine a shiplap or tongue-and-groove-style overlap with a shaped or contoured face, such as the cove detail found in Pattern 105. Because it groups several related profiles together, novelty siding is a term you'll frequently see used in lumber catalogs and building supply listings when referring to this style of board.
